"Strong currents of creative passion find expression in these sensitive drawings by Sally Lackaff."
So begins Peter Lindsey in the foreword to Sally Lackaff's new book, Wildlife on the Edge, An Artist's Observations of Nature in and Around The Upper Left Corner of Oregon. [excerpts]
As a collaborative effort with Peter 'Spud' Siegel, Sally Lackaff began in 1992 to illustrate a monthly column in the Upper Left Edge Newspaper titled, "Spud's Wildlife Column." Spud shared his recent sightings of the flora and fauna of the Northwest, and supplied the text, hand-rendered by Sally. Over time, the column became Sally's own, with a name change to "Wildlife on the Edge." The column also began to appear as a bi-weekly in the Astoria, Oregon, newspaper, The Daily Astorian. The latest publication by the Left Coast Group is a compilation of these columns.
An earlier handbound edition of 100 volumes was produced in 1995, funded by a Cannon Beach Arts Association grant. This latest edition was especially printed and bound to resemble this earlier edition.
In closing, Mr. Lindsey writes, "Savour the subtle humor and gentle nudges of satire. I trust you will find yourself as enchanted as I have been."
