Violence and Spirituality
Sunday 17 January, 10am-4pm: Tolovana Hall

This workshop examines the primary mental, emotional, physical and spiritual dynamics of self--actualized and meaningful living, and various ways these principles are misinterpreted to lead to violent choices in life, and the major ways cultural process ignores or dissipates the spiritual energy of action.

Jazz Guitar
Sunday 7 February, 12-2pm: Tolovana Hall
(Instructor: Richard Thomasian 503.338.3334) $35

A definition and brief history of jazz. Tools of the improviser: scales, intervals, chords, arpeggios and rhythm. The I IV V progression; the II V I progression; the improviser’s goal.

Encaustic Painting
Saturday 7 November, 1-3pm: Tolovana Hall
(Instructor: Susan Simon - 503.436.0178) $50

Discover the mystery of what lies just beneath a translucent surface. Using pigments, melted wax and a blowtorch, students create their own magic. Encaustic painting is a 2,000 year old process developed by the Egyptians and practiced by many current artists.

Telling Your Story
Saturday 14 November, 2-4pm Tolovana Hall

A consideration of the basic elements of story telling. What makes good writing work? Where to start, what to put in, what to leave out, when to stop. Fiction or nonfiction. Before story telling is an art, it’s a craft.

Instrumental Improvisation
Saturday 6 March, 2pm-4pm: Tolovana Hall
(Instructor: Peter “Spud” Seigel 503.739.0260) $35

Etiquette Theory and the technique of Faking It. Any acoustic instrument welcome. The workshop will be followed by an Improvisational Concert from 7-8:30pm featuring local musicians and students.

Three Free Computer Programs You Can’t Live Without
Sunday 7 March, 2-4pm: Tolovana Hall
(Instructor: John Fraser 503.436.1876) $35

Discover irfview, ms/snap and jarte: a new world of most efficient handling of data and images. Also explored: maximizing Google searches. Students will receive a disk with class notes and a website for reviewing class material.
