Note from the Cottage with Roof Replaced

"Autumn Flight" by Benjamin Chee Chee

“Autumn Flight” by Benjamin Chee Chee

               to my Mother

Perhaps it’s silly to mention
from my far-flung harbor region ….
The tri-color ink-drawn delight
of four geese running to take flight,
that you brought back from Mackenzie tundra expedition,

Now rests above my study door
for inspiration — something more
just out of reach, intangible,
without name, yet discernible,
a reminder when going out clammin’ to Ocean’s shore,

“Keep your head up and your yap shut
for take-off.  No if, and, or but.”

The rhyme scheme of this piece is an improvisation on that of Robert Burns’ “To a Mountain Daisy” (1786).

You’re in good company. Thanks for prompting me to look for this cross-border reading.
