Quantum Skip

August 7, 2022 by Steven Mayer 3 Comments

I think, therefore I am
a Cartesian dictum in western philosophy
asserts primacy of consciousness
mind knowing itself more directly
than the external world.

Philosophy cannot rest for long

I am, therefore I think
a central argument of Sartrean existentialism
asserts existence precedes essence
universe more fundamental
than emergence of mind.

Neither can science rest

I feel, therefore I am
stretches bounds of cognition
challenges scientific paradigm’s allegiance to materialism
ultimate reality more peculiar than imaginable
probed by relentless epistemological reach.

Stranger than I can imagine

I am, therefore I think and feel
explores growing scope of phenomenological engagement
with fleeting glimpses of reality possible beyond materialism
suspected hints of transcendence amidst impermanence
lingering in quantum skips of consciousness.

Schrödinger’s cat is purring and not

I am more
than I appear to be
less than I hope to be
reality no longer
what it seems
wherever whenever
within and beyond
this incredible wonder
this final mystery.

Note: This poem evolves as science, philosophy, religion, and art evolve—it was first written five years ago, and it has been revised periodically because of discoveries, insights, and corrections. As you read it, I invite you to rethink and rewrite it. Admittedly, important details percolate between the lines and add clarity, albeit less concise. “The most beautiful experience we can have is the mysterious. It is the fundamental emotion which stands at the cradle of true art and science.” (Einstein)

    I think I am.
    I am, I think.
    Maybe.

    I feel I am.
    More?
    Maybe not.

    I’ll ask the cat.
    The cat knows.
    If it is alive.
    Or not.

    Consciousness renders existence.
    Existence renders being.
    So, here I am.
    Am I a body,
    or more?
    I do not know.
    Some say body.
    Some say more.
    I like more.
    It is better than oblivion.
